Job Information

Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.

This position is represented by the Anchorage Municipal Employee Association (AMEA) and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the AMEA.

DEPARTMENT: Anchorage Health Department

HOURS OF WORK: Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

LOCATION: 825 L Street

Example of Duties

Responsible for providing public health services to reproductive health clients at a Nurse Practitioner level. Provide direct patient care, as well as oversight and mentoring of registered nurses and unlicensed assistive personnel, for clinical assessment and management of clients seeking reproductive health services including contraceptive methods, sexually transmitted infection evaluation and treatment, initial and annual reproductive health exams, and cervical dysplasia follow up. Participate in program administration activities. Promote planned pregnancies and healthy life choices through outreach to the community. Perform other related duties as assigned or required.

The Anchorage Health Department (AHD) engages in the State of Alaska Department of Health and Social Services (DHSS) emergency responses and the federal Incident Command System (ICS). This includes training exercises as part of the AHD's Crisis Health Action Team (CHAT) and municipal Emergency Operations Center (EOC). In the case of a natural or manmade disaster AHD's employees may be called to engage in emergency operations responses and recovery.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

Master’s degree in Nursing, an Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) License in Family Practice, Women’s Health, or Adult Health and one (1) year of experience in public or private nursing.

All applicants must possess or obtain:

  • Valid State of Alaska Driver’s License at time of hire.

  • Current State of Alaska Registered Nurse License by time of hire OR if an applicant is not currently licensed in Alaska, then a temporary Alaska Nursing License must be obtained by the time of hire. (Regular license must be obtained within 180 days of hire.)

  • Current State of Alaska Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) License by time of hire OR if an applicant is not currently licensed in Alaska, then a temporary Alaska Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) License must be obtained by the time of hire. (Regular license must be obtained within 180 days of hire.)

  • Current American Red Cross/American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR) or equivalent within 90 days of hire.

  • Satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160 and AS 12.62.400) at time of hire.

  • DHHS HIPPA certification within 30 days of hire.

  • Satisfactory background clearance to access the Highland Mountain Correctional Center within 30 days of hire.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's Alaska driver's license and a current (dated within 30 days from date requested) copy of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaskan driver's license was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of a State of Alaska Advanced Nurse Practitioner (ANP) license by time of hire OR if an applicant is not currently licensed in Alaska, then a temporary Alaska Nurse Practitioner Certificate must be obtained by the time of hire - temporary certificate holders must obtain a State of Alaska ANP Certificate within 180 days of employment; a Current American Red Cross/American Heart Association Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation Certification (CPR) or equivalent within 90 days of hire; and an internal HIPAA certification within 30 days of hire. If the individual selected for this position fails to obtain these certifications, he/she will be terminated.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon satisfactory completion of a national criminal background investigation (AS 12.62.160) and (AS 12.62.400). Accordingly, it will be necessary for the selected applicant to provide certain identification information and be fingerprinted. Fingerprint cards must be dated within 30 days from date requested. The processing fee of $48.25 plus the cost of being fingerprinted (variable) is the responsibility of the selected applicant and must be accomplished before beginning work.

If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.

All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.

Military Service Interview Preference:

Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.

Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
